Breaking Down Barriers: The Importance of Cross Functional Communication

In today’s fast paced business environment, it is more important than ever to ensure open lines of communication. An important aspect of this is cross functional communication where key stakeholders across functional areas are involved with internal and external collaboration. There are many benefits to this approach that give companies a competitive advantage. Without it, even the most seasoned teams can end up working in silos, resulting in inefficiencies and a lackluster customer experience.

What are the benefits of cross functional communication?

Different viewpoints across teams can assist in identifying and bridging gaps that may not have otherwise been detected. When insights and experiences are shared, a more holistic approach evolves uncovering opportunities and challenges. This allows for better decision making and ultimately more positive outcomes for our customers. Additionally, cross functional communication fosters a culture of shared ownership. The Forbes Human Resource Council states that by designing collaborative ecosystems that break down traditional silos and align resources around collective goals helps to create purposeful opportunities for cross functional dialogue and joint problem-solving. Having a range of expertise sparks creative solutions and improves overall work output through improved communication and knowledge sharing.

Additionally, improved communication reduces conflict between departments. Friction between departments often stems from misaligned goals and unclear expectations which often causes delays or missed timelines. When left unchecked this may also reduce overall morale and can diminish internal and external trust. When teams are in regular contact those issues are easier to identify and address early, thus resulting in smoother customer delivery and fewer last-minute surprises. Cross functional collaboration encourages camaraderie and a shared sense of purpose that drives team engagement. When teams understand how their work impacts other functional areas, it builds the trust and mutual respect that strengthen our core Clinigen values.

So how do we successfully achieve cross functional communication?

As organizations expand and functional areas become more specialized, the risk of working in silos increases. According to Harvard Business Review, one way to avoid this is to create an avenue for frequent feedback between customer service and project teams. Doing so will enable the customer voice to more quickly and representatively be incorporated into product development and, in turn, give life to better customer experiences.

Ultimately, strong cross functional communication leads to more efficient operations and a more consistent, elevated experience for our customers.  When teams strive to work as one with a common goal and a shared sense of achievement, the result is favorable outcomes both internally and externally.
